System record
I developed the wearable sensing path from the wrist sensor through Android integration, distance-estimation algorithms, signal compensation, and controlled evaluation. The system counts steps from changes in arm direction and compares a step-length reference with a distance estimated by integrating horizontal acceleration.
The goal was not simply to recreate a leg-mounted gait sensor at a different location. A wrist device is more convenient to wear, but its orientation and arm motion make noise and gravity correction central to the design. I applied a linear Kalman filter and gravity-component removal to reduce that error before testing the resulting estimate.
What the evaluation showed
- Across 17 controlled 3 m walking trials, the acceleration-integration estimate averaged 2.65 m, with 11.61% error against the known distance.
- In a 27-trial 30 cm planar-movement test, filtering and gravity compensation produced a 31.78 cm average and 5.93% error.
- The measurement path can connect with a smartphone app to compare activity over time and support personalized exercise or health-management services.
